Strategies for Hosting Online Exams
Below are some best practices, recommendations, tips, and tricks to help you move your exams to an online platform via your LMS or a publisher’s platform.
Same as Class Time
All students take the exam at the same time. Class time with +/- four to six minutes before and after.
Pooled Questions
Organize random-pooled questions in LMS or publishers’ platforms.
Algorithmic Questions
Create questions in LMS using formulas to change numbers. Publisher platforms can select
these questions.
Alternative Exam Formats
Consider an oral exam via Zoom or upload by video or poster submission for an exam, or for projects in lieu of exams.
Exam Time Limit
Make the exam as close as possible to class time. For example, 50-minute classes should aim for a 40–45-minute exam.
Practice Exam
Maybe give a practice exam or quiz as a trial run.
Variety
Don’t be bound by T/F or MC. Consider short answers or essays, or comprehensive problems as questions
RELAX
Relax. Be flexible and understanding. Be your fabulous self.
