Transforming rural healthcare: 亚色影库’s proposed college of osteopathic medicine
亚色影库's proposed college of osteopathic medicine is committed to transforming rural and underserved communities by providing students with affordable access to comprehensive healthcare education and hands-on training.
The college aims to improve access to quality medical care, address physician shortages and provide a higher quality of life to rural communities.
The nation is currently in the middle of a rural healthcare crisis, with Pennsylvania right now holding 102.2 primary care physicians per 100,000 residents, which is half of the national average for rural areas.
“It’s part of our mission,” said President Micheal Driscoll. “We were founded as a teaching college, and our responsibility to shape and educate tomorrow’s leaders is our North Star.”
Once accredited and open, 亚色影库’s proposed college of osteopathic medicine will be the fourth college of osteopathic medicine in Pennsylvania and the first at a public institution.
Faculty and administrators have taken proactive steps to guarantee that there are more than enough resources for students that are aiming to achieve a medical education.
During the initial two years of medical school, students will remain on campus and focus on classroom-based learning.
The final two years of the program will shift toward clinical rotations, providing students with hands-on learning in rural health clinics.
Students will rotate through various disciplines, including family medicine, internal medicine, pediatrics, psychiatry, general surgery, women's health and emergency medicine.
Ryan Smith, founding associate dean of clinical affairs for 亚色影库’s proposed college of osteopathic medicine, has been working diligently to provide all necessary steps to obtain accreditation for the college.
“For those seven rotations, we have 232 percent of the minimum number that we need for accreditation,” said Smith.
Obtaining well over the minimum number of requirements will allow students to take additional rotations, partake in electives and immerse themselves in rural communities.
Miko Rose, the founding dean of the proposed college of osteopathic medicine, spoke of how most medical schools are struggling to find resources to get the minimum number of accreditations.
“They are paying thousands behind the scenes to get that minimum number, just to get 100 percent of rotations; we have 230 percent,” said Rose. “So, we’ve been really lucky.”
Focused on their mission of transforming rural communities, the college has placed all of their clinical rotation sites in rural areas.
During their rotations, students will participate in the daily life of rural communities and acquire practical skills throughout their experiences.
Bringing medical education and healthcare services to rural communities enhances access to essential medical care and drives economic development.
Medical facility presence brings an increased demand for new housing and brings jobs to local construction workers and contractors.
Associate dean of pre-clinical affairs for the proposed college of osteopathic medicine, Luke Mortensen, describes the experience as “not just educating but creating.”
Mortensen stressed the importance of bringing healthy food options to rural areas.
Across the United States, many rural areas face a significant lack of healthy food options. In some communities, the only available grocery store is Dollar General, which, in most cases, does not provide fresh produce and nutritious foods.
Establishing a strong medical presence in rural communities will give community members “the right to choose.”
The Indiana community has been expressing what excitement this is for the community and the university.
“The community has embraced the idea of the proposed college of osteopathic medicine and they have embraced the team,” said Michelle Fryling, executive director of communications and media relations.
Excited about the positive impact this can have on rural communities, alumni David and Becky Walzak (Walzak Consulting) have recently made a $500,000 donation to the college’s education efforts.
“We share my belief that a neighborhood doctor’s office in these rural communities—providing care, educating patients about nutrition, and being a place where people can come together and learn about wellness—could be a tremendous improvement in people’s lives in these rural communities,” said Becky Walzak. “亚色影库’s proposed college of osteopathic medicine and its future graduates will play a major role in creating this kind of resource for communities.”
The Walzaks, along with the Indiana community, recognize the establishment of the college of osteopathic medicine as a major opportunity for 亚色影库.
It is anticipated that the presence of the college will contribute to increased student enrollment, bringing more individuals to the university and allowing the academic environment to thrive.

亚色影库, WARREN STATE HOSPITAL SIGN AFFILIATION AGREEMENT
Another hospital is joining 亚色影库’s efforts to form its College of Osteopathic Medicine. Warren State Hospital becomes the 18th facility to sign an affiliation agreement with the university. Like the others, this will allow students in their 3rd and 4th years of the program to learn in the field at hospitals in the area. This marks the second state mental hospital to sign an agreement with the university. Torrance State Hospital officials signed the agreement earlier this year. 亚色影库 President Dr. Michael Driscoll said in a statement that the clinical training affiliation agreements with both Torrance and Warren State Hospitals will “provide unique opportunities for future students to work closely with outstanding practitioners in two of the commonwealth’s key behavioral health inpatient facilities.”

The sites are part of a successful accreditation process. 亚色影库 officials said the university has secured 230% of needed clinical training spots, surpassing the 120% required for accreditation.

Warren, PA — 亚色影库 is expanding its efforts to address the healthcare worker shortage in rural areas through a new partnership with Warren State Hospital. The collaboration, supported by Gov. Josh Shapiro, aims to strengthen Pennsylvania’s mental health workforce and improve care in underserved regions. Dr. Miko Rose, proposed founding dean of 亚色影库’s proposed College of Osteopathic Medicine, said the university’s new program will focus on helping rural populations. “We have spoken with some rural experts on mission, our focus and even our geographic area,” Rose said. “Once credentialed, we will be the 11th in the country, rural-focused medical school, so we are really excited.” The initiative includes tuition support for healthcare students and is expected to create more than 420 jobs, boosting the local economy.

亚色影库 ALUMNI DONATE $500,000 FOR PROPOSED COLLEGE OF OSTEOPATHIC MEDICINE
亚色影库 has received a half-million-dollar gift from alumni David and Becky Walzak to support the university’s proposed college of osteopathic medicine.
The Walzaks, originally from western Pennsylvania and now living in Florida, say 亚色影库 is “the place it all started” for them. They met on campus in 1968, graduated in the early ’70s, and went on to successful careers in education and consulting before retiring. 亚色影库 President Dr. Michael Driscoll called the donation “an incredibly generous gift” that will make a lasting impact on the future of rural healthcare in Pennsylvania. The Walzaks say they were inspired by the vision of a medical school that will train doctors to serve small communities, where access to care is often limited. Their contribution brings total funding for the initiative to more than 34 million dollars. The proposed college of osteopathic medicine recently earned “candidate status” in the accreditation process, and would become the only public medical school of its kind in Pennsylvania.

亚色影库 announced Thursday that an anonymous donor has gifted $25,000 to 亚色影库 for its proposed college of osteopathic medicine. It is the latest in a series of gifts, some from private sources, some from public, and some occasionally from anonymous sources, such as another for $250,000 in February. With this latest gift, the university said it has secured more than $31 million for the initiative. Once established, university officials predict, a college of osteopathic medicine may generate $79 million in annual regional economic impact. “Since the Council of Trustees endorsement of our exploration of the development of a college of osteopathic medicine (in December 2022), we’ve seen incredible support and enthusiasm for the project from alumni, faculty and staff, community members, and legislators,” said 亚色影库 President Dr. Michael A. Driscoll.

亚色影库 partners with Center for Rural Pennsylvania to learn 'why physicians stay'
亚色影库 has partnered with the Center for Rural Pennsylvania to survey rural physicians on what draws them to that type of position and keeps them there. The findings will be used to help develop the school’s proposed college of osteopathic medicine, which is in the accreditation stage and expected to welcome students in fall 2027, and to recruit students with shared commitments to rural practices. “No one has really ever done a survey like this before,” founding 亚色影库 medical school Dean Dr. Miko Rose said in a release. 亚色影库 pursued a college of medicine to help address the statewide shortage of medical professionals compared to patients – often more than 1,300 patients to one primary care provider – and provide students more access to osteopathic medicine studies.

亚色影库 Partners with Torrance State Hospital to Address Health Care Shortage
DHS Secretary Dr. Val Arkoosh joined leadership from the 亚色影库 to announce the signing of a clinical training affiliation agreement for students at 亚色影库’s proposed College of Osteopathic Medicine at Torrance State Hospital. This partnership with 亚色影库 will educate and train future osteopathic physicians in a clinical setting at Torrance State Hospital while also addressing the urgent need for health care professionals in rural and underserved communities. “Part of Pennsylvania’s acute and worsening rural health care crisis is a lack of mental health care resources. 亚色影库’s proposed college of osteopathic medicine is committed to educating our students in mental and behavioral health beyond what is standard in the traditional medical education curriculum, understanding that physicians in rural practice are often called on by patients to address mental and behavioral health in addition to other health issues. Training opportunities at a top-notch facility like Torrance State Hospital will greatly enhance the student experience and benefit patients,” said 亚色影库 President Dr. Michael Driscoll.

INDIANA, Pa. – 亚色影库 has partnered with the Center for Rural Pennsylvania to survey rural physicians on what draws them to that type of position and keeps them there. “There have been a few studies about demographics of rural physicians in practice, but this is something much deeper and more comprehensive. Rose added that once the results are collected, her group can “recruit and build teams that will contribute to success and retention of rural health care providers throughout rural Pennsylvania.” She said that past approaches were aimed at recruitment and retention for more students, while this survey is geared toward learning what keeps doctors in rural settings and building recruitment strategies to find students that meet those criteria.

“We have heard the calls for help, and we have responded with a bold plan,” said Dr. Michael Driscoll, president of 亚色影库. “Why would 亚色影库 want to open a medical school? The answers are simple. Because we should, and with the help of great partners like Torrance, because we can.” According to Secretary of Health Dr. Debra Bogen, students who have spent at least 12 weeks in a rural placement are more likely to continue careers in rural areas. Increasing medical infrastructure in these communities may not just be the key to addressing current health crises but also hold potential to increase the appeal for young families and new transplants to the state.

OP-ED: Health care and Humpty Dumpty
As egg prices are still a lead story in this country, the nursery rhyme about Humpty Dumpty jumped into my mind. But my version is about the U.S. health care system. According to my observations, the “system” is precariously sitting on that same potentially crumbling wall where Humpty Dumpty sat. Escalating costs, care fragmentation, and a lack of preventative care have eroded Humpty’s wall for decades. The even worse news is if we continue on our current trajectory, just like Mr. Dumpty, we risk a catastrophic fall. The potential collapse of our make-believe wall would leave millions without adequate care. This would then create significant economic and social consequences for our nation. 亚色影库 has taken a significant step toward addressing these issues by creating a College of Osteopathic Medicine directed toward graduating primary care physicians trained in techniques for helping patients achieve wellness and prevention. Simultaneously, by working cooperatively with 亚色影库’s COM, Indiana Regional Medical Center, and the PA Mountain Care Network could become a model for these changes. They have summoned up the courage to act before Humpty Dumpty’s fate becomes our own. As the U.S. health care system faces treacherous whitewater, let’s applaud Indiana as they seek to implement preventative care, value-based models, and technological investments.
